A highly configurable, map-centered datafield for Garmin watches
MapIT puts a detailed street and trail map at the centre, with up to 9 configurable data fields placed around it. The aim is for a single view of all the data that you need or want at a single glance. As a data field it goes into any of Garmins's built-in activities, so that you can still use features such as workouts or access other ConnectIQ data fields. Frequently accessed maps are stored offline so that you don't need to bring your phone.

Where your location goes
Not to me. My server does one job — answering "is this watch paid up". It never receives a position, a route or a map view, so there is no track of yours for me to hand over, leak, or change my mind about later.
Drawing the map does take a request to Stadia Maps, my map provider. That request goes from your watch, by way of the Garmin Connect app on your phone, straight to Stadia — never through anything I run. What Stadia receives is an ordinary web request: your IP address, and which map squares are being drawn.
Every MapIT watch shares one API key, so those requests arrive as MapIT traffic rather than as yours — Stadia is given nothing that ties a request to your licence, your purchase or your email. They set no cookies on these requests, build no profile, and their processing terms put the retention of the request logs at roughly one to two weeks. Stadia's privacy policy is the authority on that half, not me.
Stored on my side instead: a code identifying the watch, a record of what was paid for, and an email address only if the box at checkout is ticked. My privacy policy has the detail.
What offline does not mean
Maps live on the watch, but not permanently.
The 30-day limit
A downloaded tile stays on the watch for up to 30 days. After that it has to be fetched again the next time the watch has a connection.
This is a condition of the map provider's terms rather than something I chose, and it is not something I can waive — extended offline caching is what the licence for the map data forbids.
In practice
Frequently traversed areas will be cached for offline use, allowing you to leave your phone at home for all your regular local activities.
What does not work is loading an area once and expecting it a year later without the watch ever reconnecting. A watch that has been offline past the limit shows no map for that area until it can refetch, so an area worth relying on is worth opening shortly before leaving.

Install or update MapITFrom the Connect IQ store, and free. It's a data field, so it goes onto an activity rather than your app list — the setup guide walks through it.
Day 1
Open it and load a mapThe 30-day trial starts at that moment — not when the app is installed, and not when it opens maps already downloaded. The user guide covers the map view, the controls and every setting.
Day 30
The trial endsThe watch shows a code to scan for anyone who wants to carry on, or you can type it in here. Left alone, MapIT simply stops — there is no subscription running in the background and nothing to cancel.
For anyone already running MapIT
The app itself stays free, including its configurable data fields and everything MapIT already did. Downloadable map access is the new paid part — I have not moved any existing feature behind a payment.

About me
I'm Benjamin, and MapIT is my side project.
I built it because it was what I was looking for on a Garmin watch, and I thought others may also find it useful.
That is also where the price comes from: the aim is to cover the cost of the map tiles and server infrastructure, so that I can sustain user growth and not carry the cost myself. If you don't need the map tiles, you can use MapIT for free — the app itself is free and all its features remain free. The paid part is only for the map tiles. As a side project, I will reply when time allows, and not all feature requests will be implemented. Bugs and payment issues will be prioritised. More on what that means in practice.
